Farmers in the Northeast have always managed weather-related risk, but many are finding that weather conditions have become less predictable and more difficult to work around than they once were. While average temperatures continue to increase and growing seasons are gradually lengthening, many of the most significant day-to-day challenges on farms are related to changing precipitation patterns, increased weather variability, and a growing likelihood of both excessive rainfall and drought. 

Climate change is not creating an entirely new set of challenges for farms. Instead, it is changing the frequency, timing, and severity of many of the weather-related risks that farmers already manage. As a result, successful farming increasingly depends on maintaining flexibility and adapting management plans to conditions that may change rapidly from week to week or even day to day. 

Many discussions of climate change focus on rainfall totals, temperatures, or annual climate statistics. Farmers, however, experience weather through its effects on management decisions and field conditions. What matters most is often not how much rain fell during a month or season, but whether soils are fit for the field operation that needs to occur today. 

Farming in Wet Conditions

A field does not need to be flooded to delay planting. Several days of rainfall at the wrong time can be enough to keep equipment out of fields, prevent manure applications, delay harvest, or increase the risk of soil compaction. Likewise, the same rainfall event may leave one field ready for traffic while another remains too wet to support equipment. Field fitness depends on a combination of factors including recent precipitation, soil type, drainage characteristics, topography, soil structure, crop cover, previous management, and the weather expected in the coming days. 

For many farms, weather impacts are experienced as management constraints. Excessively wet periods can narrow already short planting and harvest windows. Delayed field operations can affect crop establishment, forage quality, nutrient management, and overall farm logistics. Soil compaction risk increases when field work must occur during less-than-ideal conditions. Manure management becomes more challenging when suitable spreading opportunities are limited. In some cases, weeks of persistent wet weather may have greater consequences than a single intense rainfall event. 

Farms are responding in a number of ways:

  • Expanded manure storage provides greater flexibility to avoid nutrient applications during high-risk periods. Some farms have adopted manure injection or incorporation practices to reduce runoff risk and improve nutrient retention when weather conditions are less ideal. 
  • Cover crops help protect soils from erosion and runoff while improving soil structure, water infiltration, and trafficability. 
  • Some farms are investing in drainage improvements or addressing areas of chronic compaction to improve field conditions following rainfall. 
  • Others are evaluating crop rotations, forage species, emergency forage options, and feed inventories to improve flexibility when weather disrupts normal plans. 

Increasingly, resilience depends less on any single practice and more on maintaining management options when conditions change. 

Farming in Drought Conditions

At the same time, drought remains an important concern throughout the Northeast. Drought impacts are not limited to crop failure. Reduced forage production, lower forage quality, depleted pasture growth, increased feed purchases, and pressure on water supplies can all affect farm profitability. 

Recent years have demonstrated that farms may need to prepare for both drought and excessive rainfall, sometimes within the same growing season.

Weather Forecasting and Climate Tools

Weather and climate information are also becoming increasingly important management tools. Current conditions, short-term forecasts, seasonal outlooks, drought monitoring tools, growing degree day models, and heat stress forecasts can help farmers evaluate risk and consider alternative courses of action. The value of these tools is not simply predicting weather events. Their value lies in helping producers better understand developing conditions, evaluate available options, and make more informed management decisions.

Adaptation

Fortunately, adaptation is nothing new for agriculture. Farmers regularly adjust plans, solve problems, and respond to changing conditions. Those skills remain among the greatest strengths of Northeast agriculture. The specific weather risks may be changing, but the ability of farmers to observe conditions, evaluate options, and adapt management accordingly continues to be essential. In many cases, successful adaptation is less about adopting a particular practice and more about preserving the ability to make good management decisions under a wider range of conditions.
