About Us
Our story starts in 1910, when the secretary of the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce proposed "extending to farmers the same opportunities now enjoyed by the businessmen of this city".. The following spring, a Cornell graduate named John H. Barron went to work as Broome County's first County Extension Agent. Barron's audience was skeptical at first, and he learned quickly that he couldn't do the work alone. James Quinn was elected the first president of the new Farm Bureau and a board of directors was established. The idea that took hold - farmers helping farmers, with the county agent serving as a trusted link to the university - is still how we operate more than a century later.
That role worked because the county agent brought both scientific knowledge and a real understanding of the problems farmers faced. In 1955, Cooperative Extension and the Farm Bureau went their separate ways: Extension focused on education, Farm Bureau on policy and advocacy.
Today, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County translates Cornell University's research into practical knowledge for the people who live here - farmers and food entrepreneurs, families and youth, gardeners and homeowners. We're part of the national cooperative extension system, a partnership between county, state, and federal government, with Cornell serving as New York's land grant university. Guided by a locally elected Board of Directors, we shape our programs around the needs of our own communities.
Board Information
CCE Broome County is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors, made up of volunteers elected from the community, two representatives from the Broome County Legislature, and a non-voting representative from Cornell University. The board sets policy, helps to establish priorities, and works with staff to ensure the association meets the needs of Broome County residents.
