Summer may bring the highly desired sunshine after a long winter, but with it also comes the occasional dry spell. How can you ensure your plants are getting enough water during these dry periods? Here are some management tactics so your plants can retain more water in between each watering session.
Lack of precipitation for an extended period poses quite the threat to our beloved plants. It can cause them to dry out, especially newly planted perennials and annuals (ex: vegetables, fruits, flowers, etc.), they can develop stress, stunted growth, and possibly dry completely due to the lack of rainfall. Plants need hydration to thrive, so let’s dig in.
Time of the day can be critical when it comes to watering. With climate change, the hottest hours of the day have increased overtime. Watering your plants as early as possible, preferably before 10am, allows the plants and soil to absorb the water then retain it for later consumption. Also, the photosynthesis process throughout the day is needed to promote overall growth. If time is restricted in the morning, you can use a timer for drip irrigation watering as well. If the morning is simply not ideal for your watering session, try watering after 4pm instead. Though keep in mind that watering in the later afternoon and evening can cause more susceptibility to pests and diseases.
Applying a slow irrigation system may help with consistent watering during heat waves. Installing an irrigation system of drip tape or soaker hoses will reduce water use and hydrate the soil directly with minimal runoff.
Mulching can also be very beneficial tool during dry periods. With the sunlight causing the soil to dry out quickly, mulch helps counteract this. Retaining available moisture in the soil and aiding in neutralizing extreme temperatures. Both organic and inorganic types of mulch are options.
Rain barrels allow for storage of rainwater for later use. If you have well water, you may be limited to how much water can be used in your garden, rainwater reinforces your supply and is softer and gentler on the plants. Installing a proper rain barrel system will help conserve water and increase its availability when you need it the most.
For planting pots and similar items, self-watering systems may be a great option. Some varieties include spikes, containers, and globes. Most self-watering systems consist of a wicking material (usually cotton or synthetic fiber) that can absorb water and apply it from the bottom of the container. The water will be able to keep the roots moist during dry spells.
With this growing season, you can find which practices work best for you in the garden. The dry periods are critical times for watering and the right system can accommodate your needs.
