Nurturing Parenting

The Nurturing Parenting Programs support families with children from birth to 18 who may be at risk of abuse or neglect. These flexible, evidence-based sessions strengthen positive parenting skills, nurture healthy family relationships, and can be offered in-home, in groups, or a combination of both.

PS It Works: Parent, Child, Peer, Partner Communication Skills

Learn how to communicate with your child in ways that build trust, respect, and connection. This class focuses on empathy, clear language, and healthy boundaries to promote understanding and reduce everyday conflicts.

Strengthening Families

This 11-week series is designed to strengthen family communication and relationships. Each session begins with a shared family meal, followed by separate youth and caregiver groups focusing on communication, problem-solving, and positive discipline. Families then come together to practice their new skills with hands-on guidance and support from facilitators.

Discipline is Not a Dirty Word

Join us for a one-hour interactive workshop on positive discipline for children ages 2–10. Caregivers will learn practical strategies—like offering choices and guiding behavior through encouragement—to help children feel capable and confident. Participants receive a certificate upon completion.

Magic Years

Designed for parents of children from birth to age four, The Magic Years program offers six interactive sessions focused on early development and positive parenting. Caregivers gain research-based tools and insight into how their everyday choices influence their child’s growth and well-being.

Middle Years

Designed for parents of children ages 5–10, The Middle Years program offers six interactive sessions focused on building communication, fostering self-esteem, and strengthening family connections. Caregivers gain practical, research-based tools to help their children thrive.

Parenting After Separation or Divorce

This three-hour program helps parents support their children through separation or divorce. Participants learn coping strategies, effective communication between households, co-parenting skills, and stress management, and the class may meet court-ordered parenting requirements.

Tween & Teen Years

The Tween & Teen Years program is designed for families with children ages 11–18 who want research-based guidance to strengthen their parenting skills. Over six two-hour sessions, caregivers receive practical tools and information on adolescent development, communication, and strategies to support their child’s growth and well-being.

Parenting Financial Literacy Education class

Parenting the Second Time Around

Parenting the Second Time Around (PASTA) is designed for grandparents and kinship caregivers raising children for a second time. The program provides practical tools and emotional support on communication, child development, discipline, and navigating the challenges of modern parenting.

Breastfeeding with Confidence

Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially at first, and most new moms benefit from guidance and support. We offer help through phone consultations, one-on-one meetings, group workshops, and virtual sessions via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Our support covers:

  • Mother’s health and the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby
  • Preparing for breastfeeding during pregnancy
  • Proper positioning and latch techniques to prevent discomfort
  • Pumping, storing, and handling breast milk safely

Meet Your Parenting Team

Jefferson Staff - Amy Zukas
Amy Zukas
Amy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and a Master’s Degree in Adult Education, with over 13 years of experience in education and family support. As a NYS Credentialed Parenting Educator, she is trained in leading research-based programs such as Nurturing Parenting and the Strengthening Families Program.

For more than three years, Amy has managed and delivered parenting programs for self-referred parents, court-involved families, DSS referrals, and kinship caregivers. She is dedicated to creating supportive, accessible learning environments and developing family workshops that strengthen both families and community connections.
Jefferson Staff - Jenn Howland
Jenn Howland
Jenn holds an Associate’s Degree in Early Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, bringing more than 16 years of experience working with families and community programs. As a NYS Credentialed Parenting Educator, Jenn is trained to facilitate a range of evidence-based and research-informed programs for adults.

With over four years at CCE, including the past year as the Community Assets Resilience Education (CARE) Program Manager, Jenn has led community engagement and family resilience initiatives across the county. She also has more than two years of experience managing and delivering adult programming and home visits, offering a wide variety of parent workshops and support services. Jenn is dedicated to empowering parents and caregivers through accessible, strengths-based education that fosters connection, resilience, and growth within families and communities.

Karen Greene
Karen holds an A.A. in Early Childhood from Cayuga County Community College and a B.A. in Human Services with a focus on Community and Family Studies from SUNY Empire State College. She brings a wide range of training and certifications, including Teacher Assistant certification, the Family Development Credential, Parents as Teachers (Born to Learn, Birth to Five), Bridges Out of Poverty lifetime trainer status, and Certified Lactation Counselor.

Karen has over 20 years of experience in early childhood education, working in daycares, preschool programs, and special education classrooms. For the past 23 years, she has supported families through parent education and youth development programs such as Even Start, PIRC, Healthy Families, and 4-H with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County. Karen is dedicated to strengthening families through education, support, and community connection.

Tina LaRocca-Marcellus
Tina holds an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood, a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services with a concentration in Family and Community Studies, and a Master’s Degree in Human Services/Counseling. She brings a broad background in early childhood education, special education support, family services, and behavioral health. Her experience includes roles as a preschool teacher, special education aide, Home/School Coordinator, Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Counselor, and Certified Play Therapist.

Tina has extensive experience working with families with low incomes, providing crisis counseling, conducting home visits, and offering resources and referrals. She is dedicated to strengthening family connections and supporting both parents and children through compassionate, evidence-informed guidance. Tina currently provides parenting classes to families in Jefferson County, helping caregivers build resilience, confidence, and positive relationships.
