Budding young chefs from across Long Island gathered on March 10th, 2018 to compete for the sixth annual Junior Iron Chef competition. Coordinated by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County 4-H Program and Lake Grove Whole Foods Market with sponsorship from Bloomingdales, the competition was inspired by the amazing Junior Iron Chef events taking place in Vermont and upstate NY. Middle and high-school aged student teams created recipes and competed in the one-day cooking challenge to be the top Junior Iron Chefs on Long Island.

Students worked together to learn new skills and creatively use local, healthy, and sustainably sourced food to create vegetarian dishes that could be easily implemented into their school cafeteria menus.

Teams of up to five students in two age groups were judged on criteria including taste, presentation, creativity, use of local ingredients, use of USDA ingredients, ‘healthy choices’, and ‘cafeteria ready’. Judges on hand to test all of the recipes included Lauryn Mitchell (Chopped Junior), Kayla Mitchell (Master Chef Junior), Satoko Matthews (Community Liaison, Suffolk County Community College Hotel, Baking and Culinary Program), Joy Graf (Culinary Arts Instructor, Eastern Suffolk BOCES), Michelle Panciarello and John Brame (Eat Me, Drink Me – Gourmet food truck)
